What do Sea Cadets do?
Sea Cadet units are spread throughout the country. Our unit, "Harry S. Truman Squadron", meets in Ft. Leavenworth KS. We usually meet one weekend a month and the cadets stay overnight Saturday. Although each drill weekend includes some form of training, from classroom instruction, firefighting, to swimming and marksmanship, the highlight is usually the summer training experiences. The first summer, cadets will go to "boot camp" for 10 days. Once boot camp is completed along with other academic prerequisites, they are eligible for advanced trainings. These advanced trainings include sailing school, medical , amphibious, SEAL School, SeaBees, submarines, etc..

There're as many things to do in Corps as there are in the Navy

The program has a lot to offer and requires a lot from the cadets. Cadets must be able to rapidly develop a strong sense of motivation and self discipline to be successful. Because we are a structured program that models the organizational structure of the military, parents sometimes make some erroneous assumptions. The program is NOT a recruiting tool for the military - true, many of our cadets seek scholarships and careers in the military afterward, but that is not our purpose. Also - the program is not a reform program for troubled youth (sometimes parents have expected that the program will fulfill that threat, "If you don't shape up we're going to ship you off to military school..!")

Physically, many of the activities we participate in would require similar physical conditioning as a school sport. Therefore, there are some medical/physical restrictions. For example - asthma is a condition that will often disqualify a cadet from the program.

If you would like to see what it's all about, both the prospective cadet and a parent/guardian may come to drill on Saturday for an orientation meeting for about an hour. The cadet can stay and participate for the rest of the day in regular activities. Due to liability reasons, the prospective cadet can not stay overnight Saturday night until they are fully enrolled, but they can come back on Sunday and participate. Unfortunately, this means quite a bit of commuting back and forth, but this is just for this first orientation drill. If the prospective cadet decides to join, next drill they will be able to stay overnight.

New/prospective cadet & parent orientation is usually 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Saturday during drill. Prospective cadets can stay and participate and can be picked up at 4:30 PM or earlier at the parent's convenience. Sunday will begin at 8:00 AM, and parents should usually arrive at 3:00 PM for final formation which will conclude at 3:30 PM. These times may vary depending on the plan of the month so please contact us to confirm times and availability.
